What i thought was blowby (on a recently rebuilt engine ) looks to just be a leaky trans line. As it leaks when I drive, the fluid mixes with the crud on the surrounding parts and looks black.
I have a TH-400 auto in my 79 CJ7 with a 232 I6m and there is a steel line connecting the trans to the radiator (to cool the fluid, I would assume). About 3/4 of the way down the line there is a compression fitting, and it is leaking.
Last night I decided to try and tighten the fitting (just a little) thinking that it may have loosened up. Well, I think I made it worse. Now, when the engine is running I get a slow drip out of the fitting.
Is there any reason why I couldn't cut the line at the fitting and run a rubber hose to the radiator, or should I replace it with a new fitting?
Has anyone ever seen this happen before on a similar setup? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

That line is high pressure (not 1500 psi or nothin)so if you swap in a rubber line make sure you use to clamps on both ends. then check it for leaks. Or replace the line you should be able to find something at a local auto parts store. I have another question but rather than making another post i'll ask here. I have the th400 trans and the seal on the shift shaft is leaking. I have not looked to closely at it but it's leaking. Do I need anything special to replace that seal, and is it still avalible? |

if you have a flaring tool figure out which size line you need and go and puchase some line and a couple of fittings and cut the old one out and replace it the rubber hose will fail i promise .as for eagan11's question the th400 parts are redily avalible at any transmission shop and that seal is a very simple fix just unbolt the shift linkage pry out the old seal with a scriber or a snall screwdiver and a new one after a amall dab of tranny fluid to lubricate it can be tapped in with an apropiare deep socket or a seal installer if avaliable then simply reinstall the shift linkage
